The OSCNL Barcamp 2024 was a great success!
Over 100 open science enthusiasts and professionals got together to work on 24 topics that were determined on the spot. Here’s a glimpse at the session topics:
- Using generative AI for research summaries
- Designing an open access game called ‘Legacy’
- Bridging the gap between researchers and data professionals
- Citizen science
- How to get institutional support
- Creating a knowledge base for the open science communities (OSCs)
The aim of these sessions is for the community to continue to work on these projects. Participation after the Barcamp is also open for people that did not attend the Barcamp
You can explore all sessions in this Etherpad (Open Source alternative for Google Docs).

Satellite event of OSF24
The Barcamp took place the day before the Netherlands National Open Science Festival (OSF2024NL) in Maastricht. It was based on the successful Open Science Barcamp in Germany, that has been a satellite event of the Berlin Open Science Conference for a decade now.
The Barcamp format brings together both novices and experts in Open Science. This collaborative format encourages new ideas, knowledge exchange, and open dialogue amongst peers and newcomers. This year there are 100 participants. The Barcamp is organised by the network of bottom-up Open Science Communities OSC-NL, with financial aid from the OpenScienceNL meeting fund.
What is a Barcamp?
A Barcamp is an all-day-long event with no predetermined programme – the topics of all sessions are determined on the spot: ‘unconference‘ style. We give participants the opportunity to put their session ideas in a note pad in the weeks leading up to the Barcamp, so they can already prepare/merge some of them beforehand, but this is not strictly necessary.
The venue consists of one big plenary room and several smaller break-out rooms. During the plenary sessions, anyone can propose a topic for a break-out session. Next, you can join any of those sessions and get to work!
Break-out sessions can have any format:
- discussion groups
- knowledge sessions
- practical sessions
or any other format that you can think of. Anything goes as long as you stay within the strict time limit of 40 minutes per session. However, you can also propose a follow-up session in the next round.
